Typing sounds for Mac: how to make your keyboard sound mechanical
Updated 17 October 2026 · Written by the makers of Klyqo
Your MacBook keyboard is quiet and flat. A menu bar app can play the sound of a mechanical keyboard every time you press a key, so typing feels more satisfying without buying new hardware.
How it works
A typing sound app lives in your menu bar. It asks macOS for permission to notice key presses in other apps, and each time a key goes down it plays a short recording. It does not change what you type.
macOS calls the permission Input Monitoring (some Macs show it as Accessibility). A well-made app only listens for that a key moved, plays the sound and forgets it. It should never store what you typed.
What to look for
Apps differ more than their screenshots suggest. These are the things worth checking before you buy:
- Recorded or synthesized: recordings of real switches sound like a real board; generated sounds can feel flat.
- Choice: the type of switch changes the whole feel, so a bigger library helps you find your own.
- Key-up sounds: a second, quieter sound when the key rises makes a board feel real.
- Quiet when it should be: calls, password fields and music.
- A free trial, a clear price and a refund window.
- macOS version: some apps need a recent macOS.
Set it up in a minute
Setting up Klyqo takes four steps:
- Download Klyqo and drag it to Applications.
- Open it from your menu bar and allow Input Monitoring when macOS asks.
- Pick a sound. Every one can be previewed before you commit.
- Type anywhere. Klyqo goes quiet by itself while a call is using your microphone.
Typing sounds on a MacBook
The app adds a sound; it cannot remove the quiet click of the real keys. On a MacBook the built-in keyboard still makes its own small noise, but the added sound is louder and closer, especially through headphones.
An external keyboard works the same way. The app listens to key presses from any keyboard connected to your Mac.
Try the sounds first
You do not have to guess from a description. You can type with all 46 Klyqo sounds in your browser, and then use a free 3-day trial key in the real app. If you buy and it is not for you, there is a 14-day refund.
